Cheap Will Cost You: The Value of Quality SEO and Content Writing

By Jonathan X. Livingsworth

There's a lot that can be said for do-it-yourselfers. In some cases, it's a good idea to do for yourself the things which are within the scope of your abilities to do. You are pretty adept at making desserts, so you opt to make one instead of buying one for the office party. But are you a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to SEO and content writing? Some people think: I'm a good writer and we can save a couple bucks because I'll just write the website content myself. Or how about when you know somebody that knows somebody that could do your company's SEO for really cheap? Sound familiar? It might save your company a little money upfront, but in the end it could cost you more than you bargained for.

Every business wants to succeed. That means that companies have to make smart choices about how to spend, how to save, which costs are necessary, and which cost are unnecessary expenses. There may be places that a company may feel that they can "trim some fat" but search engine optimization and web content should not be one of them and here's why:

-SEO and content creation might seem like "no brainers" but there is a difference between simple and correct.

-SEO and content writing are important parts of any quality lead generation strategy.

-Experts understand the industry tendencies and know how to produce long term results.

-You get what you pay for. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

-Focusing too much on saving costs upfront could waste time, damage your online reputation, and wind up costing you more than it would have to hire a professional in the first place.

Marketing Zen's article entitled "Why Cheap SEO and Content Writing May Cost Your Business More" believes companies should be weary of the following:

-A SEO specialist or firm that promises immediate results in search engine listings or huge hit counts on your links instantly. These kinds of promises usually stem from inexperienced, unscrupulous individuals or firms and can have harsh consequences for your business.

-"Content mills" that turn out large amounts of low-quality, recycled content. Their goal is to produce as much content as possible which emphasizes speed over quality. If the work is of poor quality, your readers will notice. As a result, your company, website, and brand all lose credibility and you could be penalized by search engines.

The moral of the story: Surround yourself with the right people; the right companies that will help you achieve your goals. Even if you "kind of" know how to do SEO or write website content, you could do more harm than good when you cut corners. Why not get it right the first time? Hire a professional!
